Weighing My Cat
My cat Simon seems to be thinner these days. I am concerned. Unexplained weight loss could be a symptom of hyperthyroidism. I started feeding him a bit more to see if I could bulk him up. He is the largest of the five, so more food makes sense. Now I need to weigh him every week or two, and monitor what I hope will be a weight gain.
To measure his weight, I need a decent scale. The one in my bathroom is an old digital scale and is unreliable. I considered getting a baby scale, but they are expensive, and I wasn't sure the cats would stay still on it. So I went to Bed Bath and Beyond today and bought a new digital scale. This scale is accurate (or so they claim) to 0.2 pounds, and it looks a whole lot nicer than my old one. I can hold a cat in my arms, note the weight, then subtract my own weight. I plan to track all five of my cats using Excel.
I will monitor Simon's weight for a while and see what happens. With the extra food I am giving him, he should look plump and healthy. If not, off to the vet we will go for some blood work.
