Plants That Are Poisonous To Cats

My husband has a rose garden in the back yard that is blooming profusely, thanks to a fence that protects the plants from becoming deer food. I would bring some of them in, but it turns out that I have a cat burglar in the house. We displayed the lovely blooms in a vase on our table, only to find them missing a few hours later. Huh? There were clues left behind: A trail of petals led across the house to the living room where we found a bare stem. When we brought in roses the next time, the cat burglar acted fast. The rose was gone almost right away, but we saw a streak of pink run by. Jack had nabbed the flower. Now if my husband wants to bring in his roses, he displays them in a glass terrarium that Jack cannot break into - yet.

Of course I was worried that the roses would be toxic to Jack. Turns out that they are not. But I can't bring in my hydrangeas, bleeding heart, marigolds, lilies or peonies. Lilies, in fact, are particularly toxic to cats. Here is a list of plants that are poisonous to cats.

Some common poisonous plants for cats are:
Aloe vera
Asparagus Fern
Baby's Breath
Dieffenbachia
Ferns
Lily
Mother-in Law's Tongue
Mushrooms
Schefflera
Tulip

Jack Claims His Cat Food

I often order cat food in bulk, and I recently received a shipment. Before I could put it away, Jack claimed the whole order. Doesn't the look on his face appear to say, "BACK OFF! This is all MINE!"

Do Cats Control Their Humans?

Have you ever heard the saying, "Dogs have owners, cats have staff"? There's an article in LiveScience.com titled "Cats Do Control Humans, Study Finds". The researchers found that some cats mix a high-pitched cry with a purr when they want to be fed. The purr-cry is comparable to an infant's cry and is hard to ignore for a human.

I don't think I have ever heard this vocalization. However, my cats will stare at me, or sit on me when I am sleeping, or push things off my dresser, or even open the food cabinet when it is time to eat. They let me know when they want to play, get a massage, or sleep. I oblige. I clean up all their messes. I am truly staff.

Saving All Cats

The Associated Press reported today that a Greensboro, NC man stole 37 cats from a shelter to save them from being euthanized. He returned the cats in good condition, but faces charges of felony breaking and entering and felony larceny.

He is still trying to save them. The man gave the Reidsville Veterinary Hospital $5800 for adoption fees and spaying and neutering the cats.

I understand this guy. I wish we could save them all.

What is the Best Food for My Cat?

"What is the best food for my cat?" This very important question is often answered incorrectly by vets, shelter workers and big box store employees. I heard a commercial on the radio, proclaiming a "natural" dry food resulted in the enhanced health of a group of cats that were switched to this food. I found the list of ingredients:

Chicken, corn gluten meal, poultry by-product meal, oat meal, brown rice, whole grain wheat, whole grain corn, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), soy protein isolate, natural flavor, dried beet pulp, dried egg product, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, L-Lysine monohydrochloride, canola oil, soybean oil, malted barley flour, salt, dried cranberries, dried spinach, choline chloride, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, taurine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, niacin, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, calcium pantothenate, thiamine mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), manganese sulfate, riboflavin supplement (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin B-12 supplement, pyridoxine hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), copper sulfate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, biotin, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

The ingredients in bold are not something I want my cats to eat. Cats, being obligate carnivores, should not have grains because they lack an enzyme to digest them properly. Grains lead to diabetes and obesity. Corn and wheat are also common allergens for cats. Pet food manufacturers use grains as a cheap form of protein. By-products can be fine, but poultry by-products is too vague a term; what kind of poultry?; what by-products?; livers and kidneys or beaks and feathers? It is impossible to know the compostition and level of quality. Menadione sodium bisulfite complex is a controversial synthetic vitamin K precursor that is converted in the body and toxic at high levels.

On top of all that, it is a dry food. Cats don't have a strong thirst drive. They need water with their food. A natural diet would provide about 75% water, where dry food only contains up to 10% water. Cats that eat only dry food are chronically dehydrated which leads to serious kidney and bladder problems.

The answer to the question, "What is the best food for my cat?' is: GRAIN FREE WET FOOD. And if you are really motivated, raw food. A good site to read about cat nutrition is catinfo.org.

Read the labels. There are some good foods at the larger pet stores. Check out the smaller independent pet shops. A good site to look at ingredients of many cat foods is petfooddirect.com.
